THE IMPORTANCE OF ENERGY BALANCE FOR WEIGHT LOSS!

Have you been told in the past that you must eliminate carbohydrates from your diet to loss?
_
Or even Keto is superior for weight loss?
_
Maybe you have read that Intermittent fasting will accelerate your weight loss results?
_
Well, all of the above are misleading statements that usually gain a lot of attraction in the media world nowadays.
_
I am not saying that they do not work, but what I am saying is that they work for a different reason than what is being portrayed.
_
If you want to lose weight, ENERGY BALANCE is the key variable involved which facilitates this.
_
To keep it simple we have energy intake (food) and energy expenditure (activity, exercise etc.).
_
To lose weight you must be in a “negative energy balance”(Calorie deficit as you may have seen).
_
Well, how do we achieve this?
_
Eat less than your body needs to maintain your current body weight or move more in layman’s terms.
_
So let’s go back to the above methods.
_
Eliminate carbs – you cut out bread, pasta, rice etc and you lose weight. But what you really did was create a restriction of calories from this food group.
_
Keto – you consume a high-fat diet where you are limited to the types of foods you can eat which will lead to another form of calorie restriction, thus leading to weight loss.
_
Intermittent fasting- you restrict yourself to a certain time window to eat food which causes another method of restricting calories and yes you guessed it, it will result in weight loss. (If you have a history of an eating disorder this may not be a good idea).
_
According to Freire (2019), there is no one effective method for weight loss and none is superior to the other. When it comes to losing weight adopting a diet that suits you with a negative energy balance and one that promotes good food quality to promote health is a good idea.
_
Adherence over a long period to it is the biggest thing for success.
_
You do not have to eliminate carbs from your diet, go keto or even intermittent fast to lose weight.
_
Adopt a method that suits you.
_
Also, have a good think about the next time you someone tells you that “X is superior” for weight loss. (it is a very narrow-minded approach)
